Choosing Your Home Improvement Project Design
‑ Probably the most important decision you'll make is determining whether
you want your renovations to result in a new garden room, sunroom or patio cover.
To help you make your decision, read the following considerations as these ideas
may persuade you to choose one patio design over the others. It also helps to see

for examples of custom built patio cover, sunroom and garden room designs.
The Location of Your Garden Room, Sunroom or Patio Cover
‑ Where you locate your new patio cover garden room or sunroom has a lot to
do with the amount the sunlight in the area, the outdoor landscape, and the size
of the patio structure. Since Anaheim, Santa Ana, Irvine and all of Orange County
has mild weather your patio cover or garden room can virtually face any direction
and get great lighting continuously. However, a south facing garden room will get
abundant sunshine which would be wonderful for growing indoor plants. East and west
facing garden rooms and patio covers depend on your preference: east‑facing
sunrooms are perfect for watching the sunrise and doing morning activities. An east
facing sunroom will make a great workout room or breakfast nook. Sunrooms, garden
rooms, solariums, and patios that face west get plenty of afternoon sunshine and
allow you to watch gorgeous sunsets. Track how the sun moves across your house,
and choose garden room or patio directions accordingly. The U.S. Naval Observatory
offers a website that calculates the position of the sun at various times of year.
Access to Your Garden Room or Patio ‑
Before committing to a location for your patio, garden room, or sunrooms, think
about how you are going to access it. How will you enter? Will you need to open
a wall for access into your garden room or sunroom? Can you use an existing door
or would you like new doors installed. Access to a patio through French doors and
sliding doors will allow for a wider entrance than a single door. Also think about
the direction of traffic flow to and from your garden room, sunroom or patio. You
may have an opportunity to redesign high traffic areas of your home with the access
that you choose.
Choosing a Roof System ‑ The roof system
depends on the patio design you choose. For garden rooms and sunrooms, you have
a choice of a solid, insulated roof or a tempered/safety glass roof. For a patio
with a patio cover, you have an overhead choice of solid or lattice. Whichever patio
design you choose, your selection of roof systems should complement the interior
and exterior of your home.
Don't worry if you cannot decide on the above considerations today.
